When Devonté played her the unreleased demos for ‘Champagne Coast’, Solange, still seeking a new direction, was ecstatic. She and Hynes hit it off in a big way. For a time they became, by their own accounts, like brother and sister, bonding over a love for Willow Smith and The S. O. S. Band. The next time they met he showed her a playlist of muses, filled with the likes of Chaka Khan and French MC Jimmy Jay. She had one which was almost identical. That day Knowles told her boyfriend: ‘I’ve found the person I want to make my next album with.’ Solange invited Devonté to Santa Barbara to join the sessions for her first Terrible Records release.
