For, in Victorian culture, by the close of the nineteenth century, egotism had started to look like a viable replacement for feelings of dignity and self-satisfaction. The modern laborer, in no longer being able to take pride in his work, which was alienated through the industrial division of labor, had instead learned to take pride in his possessions.
