made me think of Kahneman's Thinking Fast and Slow...

Interestingly, neuroscience scans have recently shown that the executive network of the brain, which is involved in decision making, is also active during mind wandering, physical proof that when you are not watching the mind, it is often engaged in an effort to sort through cacophonous thoughts. The open awareness encouraged by defusion helps calm the default mode network, quieting the mind and helping it focus on thoughts we consciously give our attention.
