John Deere tractors are among the most notorious users of VIN-locking. The company—a monopolist that bought out nearly every other tractor company, until most of our global food supply was dependent on its products—has been a world leader in the fight against the “right to repair.” Deere says that farmers are basically yokels who can’t be trusted with the newfangled, computerized wonders that the company delivers to them. The fact that John Deere gets to bill farmers a couple hundred dollars every time its tractors break down is, according to Deere, just an incredible coincidence.
