The emo revival happening in mainstream music had already been hinted at before, but maybe I'm grasping at straws while enumerating angry, overtly emotional music: the 100 gecs were so hardcorely, unabashedly corny, and further back, in 2015 (!), Sprained Ankle had touched on a brutal honesty I was not aware of still being a thing; SZA sings F2F, channeling Avril Lavigne; and XXXTENTACION (???) — but Wallsocket really confirms a tendency, and a style, and it works so well (they were introduced as one of 2023 gems by emo-ambient pioneer Claire Rousay on her NTS show);
this is a rock-opera of some sort, a concept album that hasn't yet grown on me as a concept because the music is just so fun and good.
